UK marine plankton monitoring is delivered in a partially ad hoc way by many organisations primarily:
• Environment Agency (EA)
• National Resources Wales. (NRW)
• Marine Directorate of the Scottish Government (previously MSS)
• Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS)
• Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) through Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Northern Ireland
• Department of Environment, Food & Agriculture, Isle of Man Government
These have evolved over time due to changing needs and resources. Consequently for a UK time series there are significant gaps that were identified by the PelCap project (for example there was a complete lack of inshore zooplankton data).
